Waiou Road Hillside Pavilion
David Giles
Principal
Situated within a sweeping valley of rolling green farmland, this residence is defined by its low-slung, linear silhouette. The design creates a deliberate horizontal counterpoint to the undulating hills that surround it.
Partially excavated into the slope, the home feels anchored to the land, offering a sense of permanence and shelter. The mono-pitch roofline rises towards the view, utilizing extensive glazing and clerestory windows to capture the changing light and vast rural outlooks.
The exterior timber cladding creates a natural texture that will silver over time, allowing the building to settle further into its environment. Deep, sheltered verandahs extend the living space outdoors, providing a covered observation point for the dramatic landscape beyond.
